I've used SC in the past to do some disk transfers. However my old PC with a printer port has died. Is there any transfer utilities available that use an RS232 transfer? I have such a program for my brother's AppleII and thought something must be out ther for a 64.

Worst case scenario, I'll have to write one myself.

By far the most frequently-asked question. Stickied.

To be honest, I can't think of a single RS232-based solution for transferring D64s to a real floppy and vice versa. (Anyone else?) It would be painful, but you could extract the individual files from the D64 and transfer to them to the C64 using Xmodem, Zmodem, Punter, etc. using a terminal program.

Or, you could transfer the D64 image itself over serial (to a 1581 or something that can hold it) and then use something like D64It to write it to a floppy on the 64 side (very slow!).

Other options...

Star Commander (DOS)

Requires:
  • PC running DOS (not just a DOS window)
  • XE1541 Cable

OpenCBM (formerly CBM4Win) (Windows/Linux)

Requires:

XU1541 (Windows/Linux?)

Requires:

Warpcopy64 (Windows)

Requires:

DiskImagery64 (Windows/Mac/Linux)

Requires:

1581disk and D64it (Windows) - The "Rube Goldberg" Approach

Requires:
  • 3.5" floppy disk on your PC
  • 1581 Drive

Here's how this one would work:
  1. Put the D64 image inside a D81 image using DirMaster
  2. Write the D81 image to a 3.5" DD disk on your PC using 1581disk
  3. Write the D64 image to a 5.25" DD disk on your 64 using D64It (very slow!)

You might want to check out CBMLink. It works on all Commodore machines. On the C64 you will need to have an RS-232 cartridge OR build a small adapter for the cassette port. You run software on the C64 side and on the PC side to transfer the image. The 1541 is connected to the C64. My CBMXfer program is a GUI that supports CBMLink on the PC side.

Edit: changed CBMLink url to be more specific

Sgray - couple questions since I'm new to this.
1. Can I purchase an XA1541 active cable anywhere?
2. Is that all I need (and your software) to move a d64 image from my PC to Commodore drive?

Thanks!

This thread is somewhat obsolete, everyone needs a ZoomFloppy. USB to 1541 transfer. Also works great with CBMXfer.

I agree, for most people, the Zoom Floppy is the way to go. I plan to keep updating CBMXfer as needed and am currently working on 1581 and IEEE drive support.

Still, x-cables are tested and proven and still viable for some people. Cables can be ordered here:

You will also need to install OpenCBM and Vice to get the most from CBMXfer. Optionally you might want to install Nibtools if you get a parallel cable.
